Aberford is a town 6 miles from Tadcaster and 8 from the City of Leeds.

Parlington part of Aberford was home to the Gascoignes who had a heavy influance on Tadcaster and its surrounding villages in the past, indeed it was Gascoigne who paid for and unveiled the WW1 Memorial in Saxton village 3 miles to the east in the early 1920s.

Most of the men remembered from the first world war enlisted in either Leeds or Garforth situated 3 - 4 miles away.

The memorial itself is situated outside the village.

 

A local newspaper report of September 16th 1914 announced that 22 men from Aberford had responded to the countrys call;

SERVICE NUMBER: 47089.   UNIT/REGIMENT: 25th Tyneside Irish Northumberland Fusiliers.

GAVE HIS LIFE: 23/04/1917.   AGED: 33.

CEMETERY: Etaples Military Cemetery.   GRAVE: XXX. G. 12.

George was the son of Dennis and Hannah who lived in the nearby village of  Barwick in Elmet.

George was a resident of Aberford at the time he enlisted living on Main Street with his wife C?.

 George had formerly being in the West Yorkshire Regiment having the service number 33057.

George passed away in one of the hospitals at Etaples from wounds recieved.

Morrison was the son of Alfred Born 1868 a toolfitter and Lily Born 1870.

Morrison had brothers Harold and Charles.

"Husband of Agnes Eleanor Cockrem, of Northern Cottages, Aberford."

 
 He had previous service with the Yorkshire Hussars service number 2824. 
 
Cockerham family still live in Northern Cottages and a family link goes back more than 200 yrs.

Known to be buried in The cemetery which was destroyed during the war and only 25 bodies could be identified afterwards.

Thomas Clinton is commemorated in grave Special Memorial J20.
