Jack landed in Italy in September 1944 and gave his life during the advance from Rimini to Forli on the Adriatic coast.

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER HON MICHAEL JOHN RANCE DE COURCY

UNIT:Royal Navy H.M.S Peregrine.

GAVE HIS LIFE:18/08/1940. AGED:32.

LAID TO REST East Preston St Mary Churchyard.  

LOCAL MEMORIALS Aberford. East Preston Sussex.

Michael was based at H.M.S Peregrine a Royal Naval Air Base used for training pilots at Ford in Sussex. In the summer of 1940 German JU 80 Stuka Dive Bombers attacked the air base and Michael lost his life on the airfield.  He lies at peace in the same grave as Lieutenant Commander (Retired) Malcolm Henry Cathcart Young Aged 37 who also lost his life during the same attack.

CWGC States: "Son of Alvary Douglas Frederick Gascoigne and of Sylvia Gascoigne (nee Wilder)." Douglas lost his life leading his men as the allies made a  major thrust from Caumont l' Evente towards Vire, to drive a wedge between the German 7th Army and Panzer Group West. Douglas was the son of SIR Alvary Douglas Frederick Trench Gasciogne, K.M.G.M, G.B.E., C.M.G. Born 6th August 1893 Died 18th April 1970. SIR Alvary was Educated at  Eton College and was a Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guard.  During World War I he was  mentioned in dispatches, giving  Diplomatic Service in 1921 and 1953. He was invested as a Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1942, Political Representative to Japan (with the rank of Ambassador) 1946 1951. Invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1948.  He held the office of Ambassador to the U.S.S.R. Between 1951 and 1953.  Invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.) in 1953.

CWGC States: "Son of Ernest William and Mary Kemp of Aberford Yorkshire."  Leslie will have passed away at either Nos 2, 48 or 133 General Hospitals which were based in Tripoli Libya.

GAVE HIS LIFE:25/04/1942. AGED:26.

CWGC States: Son of William and Margaret Cundill Married 1913 All Souls Leeds Husband of Barbara Watson Married 1939 Holy Spirit Beeston Hill Leeds. Walter was Based with No 9 squadron at RAF Honington when he lost his life on overseas duty taking part in a bombing raid onboard a Vickers Wellington Mark III. Walters Squadron was later to take part with 617 Squadron on the attack on the Turpiz using specially modified 12,000lb Bombs.

Born 1892 Aberford Daughter of Arthur Born Garforth 1868 and Susannah Malham Born Aberford 1860 Married 1890 Aberford. Residence 10 White House Farm Aberford. Wife of John A McCandlish Married 1925 Marylebone London CWGC of La Solana La Haule Jersey Channel Islands CWGC Died at 195 Cranmer Court London SW3. The 16th/17th April 1941 saw some of the heaviest bombing on London since the beginning of the war starting at just after 21:00 hours until dawn. Central and south London was hit badly. This is the night St Pauls was bombed and the famous photo of only St Pauls still standing whilst fires burned around took place.
