BORN: North Milford. ENLISTED: York.
GAVE HIS LIFE: 09/10/1917. AGED: 34.

Henry was the son of Joseph Born Seaton Ross 1852 and Louisa Dean Born North Cave 1856 who married 1876 in Hotham nr Selby.
Henry had brothers Francis Born Wresel nr Hull 1878 George Born North Milford 1887 Fred Born Saxton 1890 sisters Emily Born Seaton Ross 1880 and Elizabeth Born North Milford 1888.
In the 1891 census the family were living in Saxton cum Scarthingwell where Henry's father was working as an agricultural labourer.
In 1901 Henry was working as a "Horseman on the Farm" at Middlebridge Farm in Water nr Pocklington.
LANCE SERJEANT THOMAS ZENIS BIRDSALL.
SERVICE NUMBER: 40144. UNIT: 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment.
BORN: Towton nr Saxton. ENLISTED: Pontefract.
GAVE HIS LIFE: 23/10/1917. AGED: 26.

The first of many of the Birdsall family on this site, Thomas was the son of Charles Born Towton 1858 and Emma Webster Born Kippax 1860 married 1880 and who in 1917 lived at Vine House, Barkston Ash.
Thomas (or Bob as he is called on the family gravestone in Saxton churchyard see below) passed away from wounds recieved possibly at the 8th clearing station which was in the area of where he was buried.
Thomas is also shown in the CWGC records as "Bardsall" and is also remembered in the West Yorkshire's section Panal No 4 at the Arras Memorial.

Robert was the son of Thomas and Ann Elizabeth Stroud who married at York in 1880.
In 1901 the family were living in Scarthingwell Lodge and Thomas was a Farm Bailiff.
Robert had a brother John Bede and sister Dorothy.

PRIVATE REGINALD CALVERT.
SERVICE NUMBER: 18578. UNIT/REGIMENT: 1st Bn East Yorkshire Regiment.
BORN: Hunslet Leeds. ENLISTED: Wakefield.
GAVE HIS LIFE: 07/10/1915. AGED: 22.

CEMETERY: Potijze Burial Ground.
Reginald was the son of William Henry Born Goathland near Whitby and Louisa Mary Smith Born Slingsby nr Malton who in 1889 were married at Slingsby.
They also had sons Arthur Ernest and Percy. In 1901 the family were living on the Main Street Barkston Ash, Williams occupation being that of a Bricklayer.
At the outbreak of war Reginald enlisted into the Hussars and was given the Service Number 19663.
He was then transfered to the East Yorkshire Regiment and he fought at the battle of Ypres and was most likely taken to Potijze Chateau which was used as an advanced dressing station where he died of his wounds.

PRIVATE ERNEST CRAFT.
SERVICE NUMBER: 73714. UNIT/REGIMENT: 2nd Bn Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
BORN: Barkston Ash. ENLISTED: York.
GAVE HIS LIFE: 04/11/1918. AGED: 20.

CEMETERY: Landrecies British Cemetery. GRAVE: B.63.
Ernest was the son of Arthur and Sarah Jane Wilson who married in 1896 at Tadcaster.
Ernest had one brother John William and a sister Amy. In 1901 the family were living on Main Street Barkston Ash and Ernests father was a farm bailiff.
Ernest was killed in Action fighting with the 25th Division to gain control of Landrecies which the Germans had held since 1914, this was achieved on the day Ernest gave his life.

LANCE CORPORAL THOMAS EDWIN EASTWOOD.
SERVICE NUMBER: 3/26904. UNIT/REGIMENT: 4th Bn / South Wales Borderers.
BORN: St Crux York. ENLISTED: York. RESIDANCE: Barkston Ash.
GAVE HIS LIFE: 07/09/1916. AGED: 31.
CEMETERY: Amara War Cemetery Iraq. PANEL: XIII.K.15.
Thomas was the son of Paul and Mary Ann ( nee Walker ) he had brothers Paul, John R. William Arthur and a sister Eva.
Thomas origanilly enlisted into the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and was given the Service Number 21735.
Thomas was a part of the Mesipotomian expeditionary force which captured Amara in June 1915.
Thomas more than likely Died of a disease in one of the Seven Hospitals that sprung up on the banks of the Tigris, and why the Amara Cemetery was started.
"The CWGC states that Thomas and the other men at rest in Amara would originally have had their own gravesite, but in the 1930's it was found salt was eroding the stone so the stones were removed and a memorial erected.
Unfortunately no records were kept of exactly where each man lies.

LIEUTENANT WILLIAM VICTOR LAWTON
UNIT/REGIMENT: 7th Pontoon Park Royal Engineers.
BORN: 03 Dec 1891 Barkston Ash. GAVE HIS LIFE: 08/07/1918. AGED: 26.

William was the only son of Charles Henry John Victor Born York 1844 Passed Away 1892 who was a Land Agent and Surveyor and Catherine Augusta Born Leeds 1854 they married in 1877 in the Strand Area of the City of London.
In 1891 the year William was born the family were living in Barkston Ash and had a couple of servents, Charles was obviousely very well off.
William had been educated at St Peters Schoool in York, he was an Associate of the Surveyors Institute and the R.I.B.A. and was a keen sportsman playing for the Knaresborough Cricket Club and the Harrogate Old Boys Rugby Club.
William joined the Queens Own Yorkshire Dragoons on the 17th September 1914 as a Trooper Service Number 3096, and served with the British Expeditionary Force from July 1915.
He recieved his commision and was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on the 23rd of October 1915 and was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1916.
William had an accident and was taken to No 3 Australian Casualty Clearing Station where he passed away he left £1072.00 in a will to his mother.
When William gave his life his mother was living at Castle Cliffe, Knaresborough, Yorks.

RIFELMAN CHARLES LAZENBY.
SERVICE NUMBER: 37078. UNIT/REGIMENT: 2/7th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment.
BORN: Barkston Ash. ENLISTED: Leeds. GAVE HIS LIFE: 28/11/1917. AGED: 35.

CEMETERY: Cambrai Memorial,Louverval. PANEL: 5.
Charles was the son of John Thomas and Ann Upton who married at Leeds in 1871.
They also had sons Herbert, John T, Robert and George and daughters Amelia and Elizabeth.
In the 1901 census showed Charles was a Bricklayer and his father was working as a Joiner / Carpenter. Charles married in 1904 (spouse to be checked).
Charles joined the Leeds Rifles the Territorial Battalion of the West Yorkshires and was Killed in Action in the Battle for Cambrai.Between November 23rd and the 28th.
Most of the fighting was concentrated around Bourlon Wood, and this is where Charles most likely fell.
Charles was lost on the field of battle, he is remembered with 7000 others on the Memorial wall in Cambrai.

GAVE HIS LIFE: 03/09/1916. AGED: 20.

CWGC States:
Son of Joseph and Annie Nattriss, of Barkston Ash, Tadcaster, Yorks. Born at Ulleskelf, York.
John was the son of Joseph and Annie Wilson who married in 1888.
He was a resident of Tadcaster at the time he gave his life.

The 1901 census shows Charley living in Methley and his father was a police serjeant so it could be him? his father moving around due to his job.
In 1904 a Charles Alfred married in Tadcaster as yet wifes name unknown, what can be said is that at least seven Thorntons were born between 1904 and 1914 in the Tadcaster area.

PRIVATE FRED WHITTINGHAM.
SERVICE NUMBER: 240063. UNIT: "C"Company 2/5th Battalion / Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
BORN: South Milford. ENLISTED: Castleford.
GAVE HIS LIFE: 27/03/1918. AGED: 26.

CEMETERY: Arras Memorial. PANEL: Bay 7.
Fred is shown in the CWGC record as the son of William and Zillah, husband of Mary Louisa of Scarthingwell Lodge Lancaster !
Scarthingwell Lodge is less than a mile from Barkston Village not Lancaster !
William was Fred's father, however the 1901 census shows Fred's mum as Susannah with a sister called Zillah born 1894.
His mum Susannah passed away with her baby Clifford aged 39 in 1903 whilst giving birth.
In the "Soldiers Died" database Freds surname is spelled Whittington! I cannot find Fred marrying a Mary Louisa
