GAVE HIS LIFE: 01/07/1916. 1st day of Somme.  AGED: 23.

      "Private Tom Birdsall of Tadcaster has been Killed in Action.

             He was employed at the Brewery before the war."

Thomas gave his life on the first day of the Battle for "Albert" better known as the "Somme"

and lies at peace in Fricourt where some of the worst fighting on the day took part,

 The tenth West Yorkshires suffered 22 officers killed 688 other ranks,

the highest casualty list for the british Army throughout the war.

BORN: Tadcaster. GAVE HIS LIFE: 28/02/1919. AGED: 32.

Harold was the only son of Walter (born Thetford 1848) and Sarah Ann Tindall who married 1877 in Bradford.

In 1881 Harolds father was a rent collector living on York Road Tadcaster, then as a bill poster in 1891.

 In 1901 Harold was living with his sister and grandparents Thomas and Eliza Tindall at no 20 High Street Tadcaster and Harold aged 15 was a general labarour.

Harold married Ethel M Dowsland at Tadcaster in 1908 and in 1909 a Lillian Blake was born and in 1911 anouther daughter named Vera was born,

before joining the army in 1914 Harold worked at John Smiths brewery as a traction driver.

The newspaper article below explains why Harry lies at peace in Tadcaster Cemetery, being a prisoner of war was a traumatic experiance

and he posibly passed away from an illnes contracted whilst in Germany, when Harold passed away the family were living at Hodgsons Terrace in Tadcaster.

Percy was the son of Henry Born Terrington 1857 and Annie, he had a brother Ernest Nawton.

In 1901 Percys father was the landlord of the George and Dragon Hotel on the High street in Tadcaster.

Thomas was the son of Roger and Sarah Tyreman married in 1877 at Snilesworth North Yorkshire.

Thomas had brothers Robert and Charles and a sister Margaret.

His British Army Medal Card Index states he had originaly enlisted into the Yorkshire Regiment Service Number 45198.

He then Transferred to the Middlesex Regiment Service Number 52217 before joining the Machine Gun Corps.
