BILTON AND BICKERTON WW1 MEMORIAL
Bilton and Bickerton are villages 7 miles North West of Tadcaster on the York to Wetherby road.
The WW1 Memorial dedicated in the grounds of St Helens Church Bilton is to the men who gave their lives from the villages of Bilton and Bickerton. This was unvailed on the 5th June 1920 by Colonal Jerome of Bilton Hall and dedicated by Reverend Canon Austin of York Minster.

Enlisted Fulham Middlesex 02/09/1914 5ft 2/1/2 inches tall Fair Hair Grey Eyes. Landed France 01/05/1915. Belongings sent home were a French Dictionary, Wallet, Letters and a Note Book. YORKSHIRE HERALD JULY 14 1916. Pvt Edgar Franklin, Rifle Brigade Bilton, Wetherby, has been killed in action, and a memorial service has been held in Bilton Church.

Son of Edward and Emma Navy Record Hobberly Lane Shadwell Nr Leeds. Enlisted York 14/08/1914 Occupation Gardener. Appointed Lance Corporal 20/04/1916 Joined Deal Bn at Dunkirk on 19/09/1914 until 12/10/1914. Was with the Mediteranean Expeditionary Force from 28/02/1915 until 07/09/1916. Killed in action by an enemy 5.9" shell which fell amongst the 1st Royal Marine Battalion as they were coming out of the front line between 8.30am & 9.30am killing 7 Other Ranks. 1914 Star issued to mother 15/09/1919. Laid to Rest Tranchee de Mecknes Cemetery Aix-Noulette Arras France. Memorial None.
