LIEUTENANT JOHN LAWSON-SMITH.     

 

REGIMENT: 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment.  

BORN:  Colton.  ENLISTED: Sandhurst.

GAVE HIS LIFE: 22/10/1914.  AGED: 22.

CEMETERY: Le Touret Memorial France.  PANEL: 9. and 10. 

John was the youngest son of Edward Maule Lawson-Smith born 1859 Longhurst Northumberland passed away 1942, and Ethel Mary ( nee Davies ) born Lahore India in 1853 passed away 1906.

 Edward and Ethel also had a daughter Ivy born Lucker Northumberland in 1897 and a son Thomas Edward see below.

 The family lived at Colton Lodge ( bought by Edward in 1894 ) owning 900 acres of land in the area and 700 acres in Amble Morpeth Northumberland.

 They acquired this in 1880 under the will of a cousin T.E.Smith and assumed the surname under royal licence in 1881 on succeding to Togston Hall Morpeth sold in 1913.

LIEUTENANT THOMAS EDWARD LAWSON-SMITH. 

 

BORN:  Bolton Percy.  ENLISTED: Sandhurst.

UNIT/REGIMENT: 13th Hussars.   GAVE HIS LIFE: 01/11/1914.  AGED: 25.

CEMETERY: Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.  PANEL: 5. 

 

Thomas was the elder brother of John (above) in 1901 Thomas was at  the Warren Hill a private school in Eastbourne Sussex.

 Thomas joined the Hussars in 1909.

 Both brothers were"Old Contemptables" a name given to those who had fought before 22nd of November 1914.

Edward must have been devastated having lost his wife in 1906 and seeing the family name wiped out in two short weeks with the loss of his sons, although his daughter Ivy did survive.

 DRIVER JOSEPH MASON.  

 

                                                         

SERVICE NUMBER: L/19958.   UNIT: "D" Bty.161st Bde.Royal Field Artillery.

BORN: Wakefield.   ENLISTED: York.

GAVE HIS LIFE: 01/07/1916. AGED: 22.

 

Joseph was the son of John and Martha who lived in Colton village at the time Joseph gave his life.

Joseph passed away from wounds recieved after taking part in the attack on Serre, on the first day of the battle for Albert (Somme) at the ambulance clearing station at Bouzincourt.

GUNNER WILLIAM BARTER

 

SERVICE NUMBER: 44746.   UNIT: "A" Bty 103rd Bde. Royal Horse Field Artillery.  

BORN: Chelmsford Essex.  ENLISTED: York.   GAVE HIS LIFE: 24/07/1916.   AGED: ?

 

According to the Soldiers Died record William was born in Chelmsford Essex. I can find no record of this and no record of him in the 1901 census?

he may have been stationed abroad possibly fighting in South Africa in the Boar War.  

William holds the Military Medal and was Killed in Action.

PRIVATE PERCY BLAKEY.

                                      

SERVICE NUMBER: 36733.  UNIT: 2nd / 5th West Yorkshire Regiment.

BORN: Shadwell Leeds. ENLISTED: Tadcaster. RESIDENT: Tadcaster.

GAVE HIS LIFE: 26/03/1918.  AGED: 26.

CEMETERY: Arras Memorial.  PANEL : Bay 4.

LOCAL MEMORIAL: Tadcaster ? Colton.

Percy was the son of Henry Born Terrington 1857 and Annie. And had a brother Ernest Nawton.

In 1901 Percys father was the landlord of the George and Dragon Hotel on the High street in Tadcaster.

PRIVATE ARTHUR WAITE SMITH.

 

SERVICE NUMBER: 141162.  REGIMENT: "C" Battery 66th Brigade Royal Field Artillery.

BORN:  Cawood nr Selby. ENLISTED:  Tadcaster.

GAVE HIS LIFE:  14/04/1917.  AGED:  22.

CEMETERY:  Basra Memorial Iraq.   PANEL:  3 and 60.

LOCAL MEMORIAL: Colton.

CWGC States:

"Son of Francis and Mary Smith, of Thornton, Melbourne, York."

PRIVATE ARTHUR JEAN IVAN GILMAN.      

 

SERVICE NUMBER: 377029. UNIT: 16th Bn.Manchester Regiment.

BORN: Hoxne Diss Norfolk.  ENLISTED: York.

GAVE HIS LIFE: 21/03/1918.  AGED: 24.

 

Arthur was the son of Arthur and Florance Eliza Butcher. In the 1901 census Arthur is named as Arthur Jean ! He was married to Lily who was residing in Bilbrough York.

Arthur was a resident of Tadcaster when he enlisted originally into the Kings Own Yorkshire light Infantry his Service Number was 22622. 

 Arthur was Killed in Action and lies where he fell to this day.
