BORN: Tadcaster. ENLISTED: York  GAVE HIS LIFE: 01/07/1916. AGED: 20.

LOCAL MEMORIAL: Tadcaster.

John's British Army Medal Index Card states he arrived in France on the 13th July 1917.

PRIVATE THOMAS MATHEW HARLAND.

                    

SERVICE NUMBER: 5114.    REGIMENT: 1/6th Bn Seaforth Highlanders Ross-Shire Buffs the Duke of Albanys.

BORN: Cawood.  ENLISTED: Leeds. GAVE HIS LIFE: 23/12/1916.  AGED: 29.

LOCAL MEMORIAL: Tadcaster.

CWGC States:

"Husband of Nellie Harland, of York Rd., Tadcaster, Yorks."

Son of Mathew Born Cawood 1860 and Mary Born Westow 1866.

Thomas had Brothers John see above and Fred Born 1889 in Cawood. 

 

CEMETERY: Aveluy Communal Cemetery extension.  GRAVE: K.11.

At the base of Thomas's Gravestone is the word "TADCASTER"

After the war all familys could pay for a final rememberance on the gravestone of their loved one.

Thomas fought with a Scottish regiment his parents pride that he came from Tadcaster is evedent, 

If it was your son, husband,  brother would you do the same?

                         PRIVATE LEONARD HARLAND.                           

 

 SERVICE NUMBER: 36222.

UNIT/REGIMENT:  2nd 5th Bn Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry.   BORN: Newton Kyme.

GAVE HIS LIFE:  03/11/1919.  AGED: 23.

CEMETERY: Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial.   GRAVE/PANEL: Face 5.

LOCAL MEMORIAL: Tadcaster.

 

Leonard is remembered on the memorial in Tadcaster, he was the son of James and Sarah A and had one brother Harry and four sisters.

In 1901 the Harlands were living in Newton Kyme and James his father was a Domestic Gardener.

PRIVATE ERNEST HARTLEY.

                           

SERVICE NUMBER: 82151.    REGIMENT: 103 Company Machine Gun Corps Infantry.

BORN: Kirkby Wharfe.   ENLISTED: York.     RESIDENCE:  Tadcaster.

GAVE HIS LIFE:  10/04/1917.   AGED: 27.

LOCAL MEMORIAL: Tadcaster.

CEMETERY: Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension.  GRAVE/PANEL: I. L. 45.

 

Ernest was the son of Henry and Emma  Bulmer who married in 1883 at Sherrif Hutton near York.

Ernest had brothers Harry, Herbert and William and a sister Edith.

Ernest origanilly joined into the West Yorkshire Regiment having the service number 37901.

PRIVATE WILLIAM JOHN HARKER.

                      

SERVICE NUMBER: 8186.  REGIMENT:  "A" Company 2nd Bn Yorkshire Regiment.

BORN: Leeds. ENLISTED: Leeds. GAVE HIS LIFE: 18/10/1916. AGED: 29.

LOCAL MEMORIAL: Tadcaster.

 

Husband of Florence Tempest they married at Bramley near Leeds in 1913. When William lost his life Florence was living at The Cottage, Mill Yard, Brandon Street, Armley Road, Leeds.

Although not conclusive i believe this to be W. Harker remembered on the memorial in Tadcaster, a William was living with the Tullets in 1901 in Tadcaster and he was born in 1887 which fits with the above age given.

William's British Army Medal index card states he arrived in France on the 5th October 1914, So was an Old Contempatable a name given to the British expeditionary Force.

CORPORAL JOHN WILLIAM HARPER.

                           

SERVICE NUMBER: 80487.  REGIMENT: 142 nd Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery.

BORN: Orton Westmoreland.  ENLISTED: Tadcaster.  RESIDENCE: Wetherby. 

FATHER: John Born Orton 1859.  MOTHER: Jane Harrison Born Long Marton 1866.  

GAVE HIS LIFE:  09/04/1917.  AGED: 24.

CEMETERY:  Aix-Noulette Communal Cemetery Extension.   GRAVE I. E.10.

LOCAL MEMORIAL: None. All Saints Church and Methodist Church Orton Westmoreland. 

CWGC States:

"Son of John and Jane of Ravenscar Greetham Avenue Wetherby."

 John was the son of a Wesleyan Minister he Enlisted at Tadcaster on the 24th January 1916, aged 23 years and 4 months, his service record describes his occupation as a bank clerk. 

John was 5ft 8 inches tall with a chest size of 34.5 inches. John was mobilised in May 1916 and posted to France on the 9th August 1916, he was promoted to Bombardier on the 25th September 1916.

Johns father recieved his British war and Victory medals on the 20th September 1921.
