Charles was the son of Charlie a postman by trade (Born Longwood Huddersfield 1862) and Amelia Wilkinson (Born 1865 Ouston Ferry Lincolnshire) passed away 1938 who married at Tadcaster in 1889.

Charlie and Amelia also had sons Alfred (Born Tadcaster1900) William Wilkinson (Born Tadcaster 1892) and Edward Elisha (Born Tadcaster 1897) see below for details.

They also had daughters Martha Ann (Born Otley 1890), Sarah Ann (Born Tadcaster 1895 named after Amelias mum.) and Mary Amelia (Born Tadcaster 1898).

(The photo was provided by Graham Johnson who is Wendy Iredales son.

Wendy was the Daughter of Alfred Iredale who lied about his age to join up in 1914 aged 14 and became an observer in the RFC in Belgiium.

Alfred opened a tailers shop in Tadcaster which is now the Buckles sweet shop.

After Alfred passed away in 1954 Wendy moved to Bedworth in the midlands to join her elder sister and settled there.)

Charles served on the forgotten Salonika front where the British army were involved in heavy fighting with the Bulgarian army. This part of the world was a nightmare for the British soldier as bad if at times worse than the western Front.

The heat and mosquitos were a constant menace for the soldiers in particular malaria which killed more men than the actual fighting. This area of the Great War finished on the 30th September 1918.

Graham has informed me that Charles passed away from Influenza (Spanish Flu) and his father Charlie was on his way to visit his sick son when news of his passing was received.

Charles was laid to rest in northern Greece near the Bulgarian border.
