Mr and Mrs J.Marshall of Kirkgate Tadcaster, have recieved intamation of the death in action in France on may 17th of thier second son Gunner William Marshall, R.F.A.
The deceased was previousley in partnership with his father and brother as painters decoraters and plumbers.
His younger brother Private Fred Marshall Durham Light Infantry is in hospital at Glasgow suffering from wounds.
The other brother was mentioned in the following newspaper artical.

Fred Private C. H. Marshall, joiner (John Smiths Brewery) of Sunningdale has been in the Sherwood foresters since May 1915.
He has two brothers in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

The above service details are correct shown in Those Who Died Records and the CWGC site shows this man with the details so this record is correct. No "E" was shown on the spelling of the name this is how it was on his birth certificate.
However at the bottom of the Gravestone it reads "Safe in the arms of Jesus, from his sorrowing father, mother and three brothers" The 1901 census shows Jack living with his parents John BORN pickering aged 28 and Fanny Maria Born Brompton aged 29 no other family members were there.
A Private 201568 John Claude Metcalfe Born Halifax Enlisted York Residance Wetherby KIA 31/08/1917, 18th Bn West Yorks Regt Aged 28, son of William and Rose Ann is remembered in the records and did have three other brothers ! could this have been a clerical error by the CWGC engravers and the message at the base of Jacks Gravestone was intended for John claude.
