YORKSHIRE EVENING POST LEEDS JUNE 1ST 1917.

Mr and Mrs J.Marshall of Kirkgate Tadcaster, have recieved intamation of the death in action in France on may 17th of thier second son Gunner William Marshall, R.F.A.

The deceased was previousley in partnership with his father and brother as painters decoraters and plumbers.

His younger brother Private Fred Marshall Durham Light Infantry is in hospital at Glasgow suffering from wounds.

 

The other brother was mentioned in the following newspaper artical.

Fred Private C. H. Marshall, joiner (John Smiths Brewery) of Sunningdale has been in the Sherwood foresters since May 1915.

He has two brothers in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

PRIVATE JACK METCALFE.

                                                                 

SERVICE NUMBER: 42016.   UNIT: 7th Bn.East Yorkshire Regiment.

BORN: Tadcaster.   ENLISTED: Harrogate.  RESIDENCE: Tadcaster.

GAVE HIS LIFE:  09/06/1918.    AGED:  17.

LOCAL MEMORIAL: Tadcaster.

 

CWGC STATES:

"Son of John Metcalf Rosemary Row Tadcaster".

 No "E" was shown on his grave marker or on the CWGC or Census Records.

There is  AJ.C.Metcalfe remembered on the Wetherby Memorial but Helen Barker a living relative of the Wetherby man has confirmed this is not the man mentioned on the Tadcaster Mmeorial.

 The 1901 census shows Jack living with his parents John Born pickering aged 28 and Fanny Maria Born Brompton aged 29 no other family members were there.

 " Driver J. H. Metcalfe is at the front. A brewers labourer, of Rockliffes Yard Tadcaster he enlisted only a few weeks after war was declared"
