SHERBURN IN ELMET
The memorial was dedicated on Saturday the 12th of February 1921.
It reads:
"To the Glory of God and in memory of the men from Sherburn-in Elmet who fell in the Great War 1914-1919".
I would like to give a special thank you to John Hickton the Church warden of All Saints Church Sherburn-in Elmet, for a list of the mens names given at the unvailing of the memorial in 1921.
Without his help at least four men would have been forgotten, and their details not placed on this site.

GAVE HIS LIFE: 27/09/1918. AGED: 39.

Edgar was the son of Tristram Broadwith Born Malmerby Ripon 1842 and Mary Ann Gatenby Born Wath 1845 they married at Wath Upon Dearne in 1869.
Tristram was a Railway Labourer, Along with Edgar they had a son John William born 1870 and a Daughter Margaret Born 1869 both at Wath Upon Dearne .
In the 1891 census Edgar was working as a servant, in 1901 Edgar was away fighting in the Boar War according to the newspaper artical below.
In 1904 at Tadcaster Edgar married Mary Kavanagh Born Brimmington Derbyshire 1892, she was the sister of John kavanagh remembered on this site,.
Edgar and Mary had children Lillian Eveline 1908 and Richard B in 1910 both born Tadcaster.
On the 27th of September 1918 the Canadians spearheaded an attack on the Canal Du Nord, heavy artillery supported the Canadians with the British attacking the Germans on a 20 km front.
Edger along with the 9th West Yorkshire Battalion was part of this offensive, Edgar lost his life on the opening day of the offensive which was called off on October the 1st.
