SPENCER Joseph Corporal 13238 11th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 19/09/1917 Aged 27. Born Thorp Arch 1890. Enlisted York. Son of George Railway Platelayer Born Tadcaster 1859 and Mary Ann Strothard Born Thorp Arch 1857 Married 1884. CWGC Railway Cottages Stutton. 1911 Residence Firby Kirkham Abbey near Malton Occupation Waggoner on a farm. Landed France 13/07/1915. Memorial Tadcaster.

YORKSHIRE HERALD JULY 14TH 1916 "Pvt Joseph Spencer, Stutton,Tadcaster, has been wounded by shrapnel in the left shoulder. He enlisted about a month after the outbreak of war, and has been in France for 12 months." 

YORKSHIRE EVENING POST LEEDS 24TH OCTOBER 1917  "Mr and Mrs G.Spencer of Stutton Tadcaster have received official notification that their eldest son Corporal Joseph Spencer (27) of the West Yorkshires has been killed in action on September 30th. He was formerly employed by the North Eastern Railway Company at Tadcaster.  He was invalided on July 1st 1916 and returned to the front in January 1917."

Stoker 1st Class K/11446 Royal Navy H.M.S.Hogue KIA 22/09/1914 Aged 29. Born Tadcaster 23/12/1894. Son of George Born Tockwith 1868 a gamekeeper on Smaws Farm and Lucy Ann Steele Bilbrough Born Tadcaster 1869 Married Tadcaster 1889. CWGC Son of Lucy A High Street Clifford. Wilson Steele was actually Wilson Steele Fowler. Wilson was the brother of Alfred Fowler remembered on Clifford WW1 Memorial who gave his life on the 20/11/1917. Remembered Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Memorial Tadcaster. Clifford.

 

SYKES Frank William

Lieutenant Royal Field Artillery KIA 14/03/1918 Aged 25. Born York 1892. Son of William Born Brighouse 1858 and Agnes Ann Thompson Born Barnsley 1860. Married Doncaster 1885. Residence 1911 Ivyholme Tadcaster Occupation Brewers Chemist. Memorial Tadcaster. Giggleswick School. Leeds Corn Exchange.

 

Chris Noble of Boston Spa kindly provides the following Information: "Only son of William Sykes of 'Ivyholme,' Tadcaster. Father's occupation, Chairman and Managing Director of John Smiths Brewery Limited. Frank, educated at Giggleswick School and Captain of cricket and football teams. Prior to the war, he assisted in the commercial management of the brewery, and was a director of the company. Previously wounded in action."

YORKSHIRE EVENING POST LEEDS OCTOBER 17TH 1917 "F.W Sykes R.F.A. son of Mr W.Sykes CC managing director of Messers John Smiths Tadcaster Brewery has been wounded in the chest by shrapnel and is in hospital abroad. Before entering the army he was a commercial assistant at the brewery. He trained with the Leeds University O.T.C and was granted a commision in July 1915."

Son of Frederick Born 1867 Malton was a clerk in one of the local breweries and then as a foreman in one of the stables and Annie Mary Pickard Born 1868 at Towton Married Tadcaster 1893. 1911 Residence Coronation Villas Wetherby Road Tadcaster at School. Laid to Rest Vielle-Chapelle New Military Cemetery Lacouture France. Memorial Tadcaster. George was the younger brother of Herbert Remembered Below.

YORKSHIRE EVENING POST LEEDS JULY 18TH 1917. "Mr and Mrs Fred tate of Westfield Terrace Tadcaster have recieved notice that their son Trooper Herbert Tate has been killed in action on July 11th. A clerk at Messers John Smiths Brewery he joined the colours in November 1914, and saw service at the Balkans ,where he was invalided after an attack of Malaria."
