11055450 Royal Artillery 171 Indep. A.A. "Z" Battery 10/12/1943 Aged 38. CWGC Son of Matthew and Mary Harland of Tadcaster. Husband of Elizabeth Ann Slack Married Tadcaster 1927. CWGC of Billingham-on-Tees Co. Durham. Arthur passed away in Kent and was laid to rest on the 15th January 1943. Arthurs Brother's John and Thomas Mathew are remembered on the Tadcaster WW1 Memorial in Tadcaster.

PRIVATE MAURICE GEORGE HARVEY

469864 1st Airbourne Bn Border Regiment 09/07/1943 Aged 20. CWGC Born 1922 Tadcaster. Son of Charles and Eleanor Holdsworth. Maurice gave his life on the evening of the 9th June 1943 taking part in Operation 'Husky', a joint venture with the US 82nd and the British 1st Airborne Divisions making the first landings on Sicily at night. Due to navigational errors, hundreds of paratroopers were dropped in the sea and drowned, this may explain why Maurice was never found. Remembered Cassino Memorial Italy.

PRIVATE HENRY HUSBAND

4866542 5th Bn Infantry East Yorkshire Regiment 04/08/1943 Aged 20. CWGC Son of Squire 1911 Brewers Labourer Church Street and Jessie Berry Married 1920 Tadcaster. Henry landed in Sicily on the 10/07/1943 after serving in North Africa, it most likely Henry gave his life near the town of Catania which was captured on the 05/08/1943. Laid to Rest Catania War Cemetery Sicily.

SERJEANT AIR GUNNER LAURENCE JAKEMAN

1505659 100 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 28/04/1944 Aged 22. Son of George William ?? Edith Jakeman of Tadcaster Yorkshire. Husband of Ruth Anne Thompson Married 1941 Tadcaster. Laurence was Laid to Rest at Cethey-Sous-Mountfort Churchyard France 35 Km North West of Epinal France with the 5 other crew members who gave their lives on the 28th April 1944 they are:  

Flying Officer Edward Bashi Born Iraq.

Pilot Officer William John Bell of Newbury,

Serjeant William Leonard Evans of Glamorgan.

Flight Serjeant Kenneth Stanley Keeping of Exeter

Flight Serjeant Gordon William McLean of New South Wales Australia. 

Laurence is shown as Born 1922 Mothers Maiden Name Henderson. Edith Married George William Jakeman in 1904 and he was KIA in 1916 being remembered on the Tadcaster WW1 Memorial. All records show George was KIA however this places in doubt if this did indeed occur and can find no trace of his death. Did Edith Marry Again ? and Laurence fought under her previous married name. CAN YOU HELP.

819123 1 Battery Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps 25/12/1941 Aged 27. Born 1913 Tadcaster. Son of Arthur and Annie Hawkins Married 1891 Tadcaster. On the 25th of December 1941 after short but intense fighting the Japenese captured Hong Kong. Remembered Sai Wan Memorial Hong Kong China. Loyds Brother Arthur is Remembered on Tadcaster WW1 Memorial.

1622261 178 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 08/08/1944 Aged 21. Born Knaresborough  1923. CWGC Son of John and Minnie Wood Married Knaresborough 1921 CWGC of Thorp Arch Yorkshire. Laid to Rest Budapest War Cemetery Hungary.

313505085 4/5th Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers 06/04/1945 Aged 24. CWGC Son of William and Annie Reynolds Married 1916 Suffolk CWGC of Hazelwood. Laid to Rest Reichswald Forest War Cemetery Germany.

CORPORAL BENJAMIN PIPE

21519416 BSRU Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 07/11/1944 Aged 40. CWGC Son of Benjamin and Anne Lowcock Married Leeds 1896. Husband of Hilda Sarah Marguerite Evans Married 1935 St Aidens Leeds. 

Benjamin lost his life on board His Majestys Landing Ship Tank 420 which was carrying R.A.F personnel and was struck by a mine outside the port of Oostende Belgium. Benjamin was taking part in the The Battle For Walcharen Island which had begun on  the 1st of  November 1944. (Click Here) Hitler had declared this island a bastion, which means that his men were forbidden to surrender,and would fight to the last man, the island was used for launching V1 rockets, and was of stratigic importance.General Patton was quoted a saying that the capture of Walcharan  Island would considrably shorten the war. The Germans surrendered on the 8th of November 1944 and the British and Canadian casualties numbered 8.000. Laid to Rest Blankenberge Town Cemetery Belgium.

4540425 6th Bn Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment 18/06/1944 Aged 24. Born 1919 Tadcaster CWGC Son of Samuel and Agnes Ethel Howdill Married 1907 Tadcaster. Remembered Bayeux Memorial France.

SERJEANT JAMES GRAHAM RICHARDSON

407317 Royal Tank Regiment 16/08/1944 Aged 29. Born Liverpool. Son of James Henry and Ada Mary Graham Married 1905 Prescot. CWGC Husband of Rosina Evelyn of Colchester Essex. On checking Army Roll of Honour 1939-45 records James was a resident in the York District when he enlisted. James gave his life fighting in the Falaise Gap Campaign around Caen France. Laid to Rest Banneville-La-Campagne War Cemetery France.  Brother Richard Remembered Below.
