George was the son of Frederick born 1867 in Malton North Yorkshire who was a clerk in one of the local breweries and then has a foreman in one of the stables,.
His mother Annie Mary Pickard was born in 1868 at Towton near Tadcaster they married in 1893.
George was the younger brother of Herbert see below who also gave his life.

"Mr and Mrs Fred tate of Westfield Terrace Tadcaster have recieved notice that their son Trooper Herbert Tate has been killed in action on July 11th.
A clerk at Messers John Smiths Brewery he joined the colours in November 1914, and saw service at the Balkans ,where he was invalided after an attack of Malaria."
